Ancient Kauri Paua ( Abalone) Kaleidoscope (KAL004) -
Current Browse Location: Home : All Items : Home and Garden New Zealand > Ancient Kauri Kaleidoscopes >
This particular Kaleidoscope is called Paua because it contains pieces of Paua ( pronounced Pa-Wa), our very beautiful abalone shellfish. To see what a Paua shell looks like in its entirety, click here. The Kaleidoscope is approximately 8 1/2" long and comes with a Kauri display stand. It is attractively boxed, ready to give as a gift if you so desire. A beautiful ornament, a piece of history, a great collectible, and a fabulous addition to a Kaleidoscope collection!
More information on the Kauri: The Kauri tree is the world's oldest commercially available timber. The only Kauri timber available to craftsmen is that which has been buried in swamps for tens of thousands of years, ( or demolition timber) as the tree is now protected. These Kaleidoscopes are made from swamp kauri. Many thousands of years ago, something happened on earth which literally flattened these massive trees. They became buried under peat swamps, which kept the timber perfectly preserved. It is a huge job to unearth these enormous tree stumps ( there is one buried near my home, but it is too big to remove), but the wood is so beautiful that the effort is worth the exertion! Items made from kauri have an interesting grain and a beautiful warm honey color. |
