This slim but informative book is essential reading for all New Zealanders both here and overseas. The debate over the Treaty of Waitangi, signed by the British and the Maori on 6th February 1840, rages on today. Whilst it was indeed New Zealand's founding document, even since it has been interpreted in varying ways. This has led to many disputes, the most recent being ownership of the foreshore and seabed.
This Treaty of Waitangi book is a good overview of the Treaty, how it came to be, its wording, and the ensuing conflict between the Crown and the Maori people. It is a good starting point for reading more on Maori history.
