In Maori mythology, the Marakihau was in a human form, but with a long tongue with which it could swallow up canoes and men. Marakihau carvings often decorated the porches of carved houses. This particular Marakihau carving is made from the Kauri tree. It features the human-like head and body, but with a fish tail. The statue stands 12 3/4" tall. |
