This model of a Maori War Canoe ( Waka Taua) is beautifully carved from magnificient native Matai timber.
These wonderful craft can be viewed at several marae around the country. They look spectacular, and were traditionally paddled by up to 100 warriors. The prow, stern-post and side panels of the canoe were beautifully carved and featured designs and styles particular to each tribe.
This Maori war canoe is also beautifully carved, and inlaid with New Zealand Paua shell. It measures approximately 13" long.
