This intricately carved Maori Bone Hook Pendant was carved by local Maori carver Mark Strickland.
Maori designs carry a spiritual meaning as well, making them extra special to own or wear. In the case of the Fish Hook, the design signifies abundance, strength and determination. It is believed to bring peace, prosperity and good health to the wearer. The hook is a good luck charm for catching positive energy, and for safe travel over water.
Mark has been carving bone for nearly 20 years, having been trained by local Maori carvers. He is of Ngati Paoa descent, with some Tahitian blood mixed in there too. Mark's carving is characterised by its very fine detailing. Whilst many of his designs are of traditional forms, such as the Tiki, Mark adds a contemporary twist. He encourages you to add your own meaning to his pieces, with his blessing.
Mark uses cow bone for his carvings, as do most carvers. He chooses not to bleach it white, instead leaving the bone a natural creamy colour. Your carving may even show natural mottling, from the oils in the bone. As you wear the carving next to your skin, it will also pick up oils from your skin. Maori believe this to be spiritually important, that the carving becomes part of you, taking on some of your own inner spirit.
This fabulous Fish Hook pendant measures approximately 1 5/8" long. It is carved on both sides. Note the Koru designs carved into the hook. the Koru design carries a spiritual meaning of peace, harmony, personal growth, and new beginnings.
