New Zealand's Top Tracks is a practical guide to the eight walking tracks designated Great Walks by New Zealand's Department of Conservation. And so they are! Each track takes at least 2 days to hike ( we call it "tramping" here), with one taking 5-7 days. Alternatively, you can use the book to choose shorter walks, just hiking part of the track and then re-tracing your steps.
Each track is described in detail: a brief history of the area, how to get there, how long it will take, when is the best time to go, and what you will see. Also included is information about side tracks and other activities such as fishing and swimming. The text is backed up by clear maps plus black-and-white photos of some of the scenery.
Mark Pickering writes in an easy, friendly, Kiwi style. It's a great book to read, even if you never take the walks!
