This Cook Islands Mother of Pearl Shell Fish Hook Pendant is from our Cook Islands Maori collection.
The Pearl Shell comes from the Black-lip Mother Of Pearl Oyster Shell, the oysters from which the famous Cook Islands Black Pearls are collected.
All our Cook Islands MOP Pendants are hand-carved in the Cook Islands (Rarotonga), by Cook Islands Maori. Each shell is different, so each carving is slightly different, as you will see from the photo below. But each is beautiful in its own way.
In the case of the Maori Fish Hook pendant, the outer edge of the hook is notched, and the back side of the pendant is left as raw outer shell. A wave pattern is carved into one side of the hook.
The Cook Islands Maori Hook design is strikingly similar to the New Zealand Maori design, and carries the same spiritual meaning: the hook conveys strength, determination, good health and good will, and is believed to be a good luck charm for safe travel over water.
The Cook Islands Maori MOP Fish Hook Pendant measures approximately 2 5/8" long and hangs from a 30" black cord.
