I am honoured to be able to offer you a Mike Tavioni carved Cook Island Maori Traditional Spear.
Mike resides on the main island of Rarotonga, and is considered one of the top Cook Island carvers, in various mediums. In this case, he has carved this traditional spear is intricately carved from the hard and heavy ironwood, sourced in the Cook Islands.
The beautifullly carved spear is 31 3/4" (80.5cm) long and at its widest is 1 7/8" (4.7cm). Spears and clubs were used in tribal battles on the islands.
At the heavily carved end of the spear, there are 4 distinct Cook Island carving patterns used; two sections of carving representing basketweaving, one section representing two families holding hands, and one section representing the kina ( sea egg seafood).
It's a great pleasure to be able to offer you this hand carved Cook Islands traditional weapon, and an honour that it has been made by Mike Tavioni.
This is a wonderful piece to add to your weapons collection, or to remind you of the Cook Islands.
Patterns are from top to bottom:
1. Two families holding hands ( with weaving showing on lower edge), a symbol for unity
2. Weaving
3. Kina ( sea egg)
