This stunning collectable bone carving is by our hugely talented Maori artist, David Taylor.
This carving is called Hei Matau Taniwha Kaitiaki.
A taniwha is a Maori mythological being that lived in swamps, rivers, dark caves, and in the sea. The taniwha would take on a different appearance, depending on where it resided. In the sea it might take on the appearance of a whale or shark. In inland waters it might look more like a gecko or tuatara.
Maori were respectful to taniwha, who would act as guardians if treated with respect. In particular, taniwha would kill opponents of their tribe.
In this stunning bone carving of a taniwha from the sea, it is swallowing the war canoe of an opposing tribe.
This awesome Maori bone pendant measures approximately 90mm x 35mm (3 1/2" x 1 3/8") and comes to you on a waxed nylon cord, for lasting safety. I recommend you look after this pendant with great care, since David's pendants are works of wearable art.
Purchase it while you can, as David usually prefers to make only one-off pieces.
