This beautiful new carving by Maori artist David Taylor is called Hei Matau Kaitiaki Aihe Maui. As you can see in the bone carving, a dolphin is portrayed. That dolphin is Mauis Dolphin, the world's smallest and rarest dolphin, and a species threatened with extinction.
The name of this dolphin is based on the Maori name for the North Island, Te Ika a Maui. Maui's dolphins are found along the North West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. They are smaller than humans, and unfortunately are easily caught in the set-nets used by fishing trawlers. There is now a ban on set netting in New Zealand waters.
This awesome pendant measures approximately 95mm x 30mm (3 3/4" x 1 1/4") and comes to you on a waxed nylon cord, for lasting safety. I recommend you look after this pendant with great care, since David's pendants are works of wearable art.
