This hand carved bone Hei Matau Hook Pendant is designed and carved by highly talented local Maori artist, David Taylor.
The Hei Matau is the Maori Fish Hook. Its design signifies abundance, strength and determination. The Hook design is believed to bring peace, prosperity and good health, and is a good luck charm for catching positive energy and for safe travel over water.
With this hook, David has created a slim fish hook, and carved the eye of the fish hook so that the top of the hook appears to curve and overlap itself. Tea stain in the centre of the carving creates extra interest.
David has left the rest of the bone in quite a natural state, instead of the usual extremely bleached white bone. This makes the piece look so natural, as if it is ready for the not-so-perfect human to wear against their skin.
The Hei Matau Tea-stained Bone Pendant measures approximately 3 1/8" (8cm) long. It hangs from a handmade muka (flax fibre) cord, with adjustable paua shell toggle.
