This David Taylor Maori Bone Patu (Club) Pendant is carved in a Pitau pattern.
Pitau is the Maori name for an unfurling fern frond, and the design is called Pitau when the fern frond is carved as an openwork (cut-out) design. This is a similar design to that used on rafters, where it is called kowhaiwhai.
As with all Maori art, the design carries a spiritual meaning too. In this case, with this particular design, the Pitau represents family lineage and unity. It is also a symbol of affection between people. The Patu, a club-like Maori weapon, signifies strength.
The Patu with Pitau carving would therefore be a great gift within and between families, but can also be worn simply because you enjoy the design.
The Patu pendant measures approximately 80 x 23mm (3 1/8" x 1") and rests on a natural flax adjustable cord.
Designed and made by talented Maori artist, David Taylor, of Whangarei, New Zealand.
