David Taylor Maori Bone Kapeu Ear Pendant
This Bone Kapeu, or Maori Ear Pendant, was carved by highly regarded local Maori carver, David Taylor.
You don't have to wear it from your ear - it comes on a handmade muka (flax fibre) cord with paua (abalone) shell adjustable toggle.
But in days gone by, a Kapeu was worn only by those of high rank in Maoridom. Kapeu were held in high regard and passed down through the family.
This Bone Kapeu pendant measures approximately 4 3/8" (11cm) long. The hole for the cord is beautifully ringed with New Zealand Paua (abalone) shell. At the top of the Kapeu there is a tiny but beautifully carved New Zealand parrot.
