This framed box holds a beautifully carved Rimu Patu, a Maori hand-to-hand-combat weapon.
The Patu and the frame are made from Rimu, a native New Zealand timber with a lovely honey colour and beautiful grain.
The Maori Patu weapon was used in a thrusting manner, to hit the ribs, jaw and temple. Often the front edge was sharpened to enhance the jabbing action. The patu usually had a hole in the end of the handle, so a wrist cord could be attached. This helped ensure the patu did not slip out of a sweaty palm.
This Patu lies safely inside its framed box with glass front. The box measures approximately 9" x 7" x 1 3/8" (23cm x 18cm x 3.5cm). It comes with a hook on the back so is ready to hang, and it comes with a brochure explaining its background.
Proudly made in New Zealand by New Zealanders.
Choose from an unstained Patu, as photographed, or a stained Patu ( reddish brown colour).
