This fabulous Maori Bone Hook Pendant is beautifully made by Joe, our talented South Island Maori carver.
A very popular design, the Hook is barbed and beautifully carved. Note also the wonderful lashing at the top of the hook, and the plaited cord. The bone pendant, itself, measures approximately 1 3/4" (4.5cm) long.
Fish hooks were very important to Maori, as fish was a crucial food source.
Maori designs carry a spiritual meaning as well. In the case of the Fish Hook (hei matau), the design symbolises abundance, good health, strength and determination. It is believed to bring peace and prosperity, and is a good luck charm for catching positive energy. It is also a good luck charm for safe journey over water.
A fabulous Maori pendant, and a great gift too.
