This carved Maori bone pendant is in the form of a supernatural being, the Manaia ( pronounced Ma-nigh-uh).  The Maori Manaia is a spiritual guardian, to ward off danger and protect against intruders.  It acts as a provider and protector over the sky, earth and sea.  The Manaia has long been a favourite piece of jewelry for those in the army, navy and airforce.

Manaias usually have bird-like figures.  Others may have bird heads and human bodies.  This one has a bird head, a swan-like tail, and a human hand.  Fabulous!  And the Manaia is finished off with a beautiful piece of New Zealand Paua Shell for its eye.
