This Maori Bone Manaia Fish Pendant is one of our largest and one of our most beautiful.

This Maori bone pendant, carved in the South Island of New Zealand, is in the form of a supernatural being, the Manaia ( pronounced Ma-nigh-uh).  The Manaia is a spiritual guardian, to ward off danger and protect against intruders.  It acts as a provider and protector over the sky, earth and sea.

Manaias usually have bird-like figures.  Others may have bird heads and human bodies.  This one has two heads, human hands, and appears to be protecting the fish.  It is further enhanced by the addition of pieces of New Zealand Paua Shell.

Maori Manaia Pendants have long been a favourite piece of jewelry for those in the armed forces - the army, navy and airforce.
