by Johan Bonnevie 2004, Viking Sevenseas NZ Ltd, 60pp Glimpses of the Moriori World may be a small book, but it is packed with interesting facts and photos of the Moriori, inhabitants of New Zealand's Chatham Islands who were virtually wiped out by tribes from mainland Taranaki in the 1830s. This book is a really interesting read about a people we still know little about. The Moriori are believed to be Polynesian people who migrated from the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Over the centuries their culture changed markedly. Their food, clothing and canoes reflected their new environment. Their social structure changed and they lost the desire for mana ( power and status) and for cannibalism. They became a peaceful race, and that was one of the reasons why they were wiped out. The book details the Moriori history, artistry and how they lived, and provides accounts written by observers. An essential read for all New Zealanders and anyone interested in Polynesian culture. |
