This Greenstone Jade Manaia Koru Pendant is a Maori guardianship symbol.

In Maoridom, designs carry a spiritual message.  The Manaia is a carrier of supernatural powers, and it acts as a provider and protector over the sky, earth and sea.  It is normally depicted with a bird-like head, but often with other human features as well.  The Manaia is worn for its protective powers, and is a favourite of people in the armed forces.
