Whales are an important part of Maori mythology.   And New Zealand in the 1800s had many whaling stations.

But luckily times have changed, and we are all now full of respect for these huge and mystical creatures.  Whaling in New Zealand is now all about whale-watching, a major tourist attraction in New Zealand.

And world-renowned whale researcher, Ingrid Visser, comes from the coast I live on.   She regularly reminds us to keep a lookout for Orca, as she can recognise each one of the individual orcas that frequent our local seas.  Amazing, eh?
