kako (Callaeas cinerea) is a native forest bird of New Zealand.  The bird is endangered, its population decimated by introduced predators.  Its diet consists of everything from fruit and seeds to leaves and insects.  Its beautiful clear song can be heard over a long distance.  Nesting pairs can be heard singing duets in the early morning.
