The tatua is the wide belt or cummerbund worn over the top edge of the piupiu, in the male Maori kapa haka costume.

Traditional Maori costumes have adapted and changed over the years. Currently the "traditional" Maori costume usually has the male tatua and the female pari (bodice) made from matching traditional taniko weaving.

However, taniko weaving is time consuming, and alternative techniques have been employed to make the kapa haka costume more affordable and widely available.

In this case the tatua is made from printed fabric, with adjustable velcro closure.  The print mimics taniko weaving, with its pattern of triangles, kowhaiwhai and korus.  The belt is 4" (10cm) wide.

When ordering, please remember to let us know the size you require.  You may email your waist measurement to us here - make sure you use a tape measure to give us the actual size of your puku!

IMPORTANT: We have only one fabric design available, as per the main photo ( see bottom of page).  The red/white/black design shown in the photo immediately below is NOT available.  We will let you know if other designs become available.
