This New Zealand Maori Bone Carving is in the shape of an ancient Maori Fish Hook, Hei Matau.  Fish hooks hold great significance in Maoridom, as in Maori mythology New Zealand was fished up from the sea.  And seafood was and still is an important part of the New Zealand diet.

This attractively carved pendant is in the shape of a fish hook, with the end curving into a whale's tail.  Along the bottom edge, the curved stained section represents the sea, and the edge is finished off by a beautiful piece of New Zealand Paua ( abalone) shell.

The Maori fish hook signifies abundance, strength and determination.  It is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and good health.  It is a good luck charm for catching positive energy, and for a safe journey over water.
