The whale was very important to the Maori, as a food source when whales beached, and for their bones, which were carved into musical instruments, utensils, weapons, and items of jewelry.  Spiritually, some tribes had a great affinity for the whale, believing their ancestors arrived in New Zealand on a whale.  

As a nation, New Zealanders have a great love of the whales which swim through our waters, and they are protected.  We do our utmost to get beached whales back to sea, but if they should die, their bones are allowed to be used by the local Maori tribe (only), and our scientists autopsy bodies to gain clues on why they beach in the first place.
