These beautiful Brown and Green Maori Flax Backpacks ( harakeke kete) are made by a lovely Maori weaver in Auckland, New Zealand.

Maori weaving is a traditional craft, further enhanced in recent years by the addition of colurful dyes to add interest, and the finishing off with driftwood, shells and feathers.

These flax backpacks are woven using both natural and dyed flax.  They measure approximately 13" to 15" (33cm to 38cm) tall and approximately 10" (25cm) wide at its base, and the clasp is a piece of paua shell.

These beautiful handmade kete are really comfortable to wear.  Great for going to markets, where you want to keep your hands free.  Kete also make wonderful wallhangings.  Don't hide your kete backpack away in the cupboard, keep it on your wall to admire.  Then when you need it, just take it down and away you go!

CARE OF FLAX:  It's a natural fiber, so keep it dry.  You can pack a lot into this large backpack, but avoid really heavy items.  The kete is best hung by its straps when not in use.
