For those who cannot afford the Full Size Greenstone Mere, we have one that is just over half size.  It would look fabulous hanging on the wall, or on a small stand.

This Greenstone Mere is fashioned exactly the same as pre-European Greenstone Mere.  Carving at the handle end of the Mere provided for better grip, and a thong (this one is leather; original ones would be made of flax fibre) allowed the mere to hang around the wrist.  Mere were often tucked into the top of the piupiu or the tatua belt when not in use.

Large pieces of Greenstone are always beautiful, because you can see the striations in the stone that much better.  Greenstone, called Pounamu by the Maori, is found only on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.  It is a finite resource managed carefully by the local Maori iwi (tribe).
