Maori Print - Chief with Moko Tattoo and Taiaha
This fabulous Maori lithograph print by Douglas Ferris features a fearsome Maori chief with full ta moko tattoo and holding a taiaha.
The Maori print measures 12 3/8" (31.5cm) x 17 1/2" (44.5cm) and is printed on good quality textured card. It comes with a descriptive page.
The print is called Te Mana (the power). The famous explorer, Abel Tasman, described Aotearoa (New Zealand) as a land of Giants. In times of old, the Maori people were big in physical stature. It was apparently a common sight to see men who stood well over 6 and 7 feet tall.
Depicted in this print is that awesome sight early explorers, settlers and adventurers alike would have witnessed having arrived in pre-colonial Aotearoa. A Warrior Chief stands ever watchful. He holds a taiaha (staff). Slung across his shoulder is a korowai (Cloak) made from flax linen. Notice the puhoro (thigh tattoo) as well as the moko ( facial tatoo representing his status). Clearly a daunting figure to be respected.
