Maori Print - Haka Warriors with Taiaha
This wonderful Maori haka lithograph is by Douglas Ferris. The print features Maori warriors, fully tattooed, dancing the Haka and grasping their Taiaha.
Note the huia feathers in their heads, and the bone or greenstone pendants around their necks.
The lithograph measures 17 1/2" (44.5cm) x 12 3/8" (31.5cm) and is printed on good quality textured card. It comes with a descriptive page.
In the execution of the Haka the reasons were many-fold; to instill fear, express emotion or to entertain. The haka demanded exuberance, agility, and endurance. The most important element required was that of total control. These toa (warriors) literally fed off each others ihi (inner strength), totally focused on the purpose at hand.
Note the facial expressions of the warriors. Observe their whatero (protruding tongues), their pukana (eyes big and wide), facial contortions and grimaces, and their moko ( facial tattoo) and puhoro (thigh tatoo). Their expressions make the haka come alive in the print.
