Maori Print - Maori Ariki (Supreme Chief) with Mere
This Douglas Ferris lithographic print of a Maori supreme chief (Ariki) shows him holding a Maori mere (club), and with full Maori moko tattoo on his face.
The Maori print measures 12 3/8" (31.5cm) x 17 1/2" (44.5cm) and is printed on good quality textured card. It would look fabulous framed, and comes with a descriptive page.
Ariki is an inherited title, usually given to the eldest member of a family of great mana (renown). These Ariki had great authority and were expected to use it for the good of all their iwi (tribe).
They were schooled in wananga ( places of higher learning) to excel in leadership in times of conflict as well as peace; to be providers of the tribe's needs; protectors and diplomats; exercising their powers with wisdom, compassion, and temperate authority.
Standing proud, this Ariki exudes Mana. He carries a full-face tattoo, huia feathers in his hair, and wears a much prized korowai whakahekeheke (cloak with black huka tags arranged in a vertical patterned formation).
