Maori Print - Maori with ta moko tattoo
This Douglas Ferris lithograph print features a Maori chief (rangatira) called Tomika Te Mutu. Note the fine detailing in his ta moko facial Maori tattoo.
Tomika Te Mutu was a rangatira from Tauranga, New Zealand, and an astute businessman adept to the ways of European commerce. He owned several merchant sailing ships and traded Bay of Plenty food crops to hungry Aucklanders in its early days.
The stern no nonsense glare of Te Mutu is one of the few portraits recorded of old time Maori peering directly into the photographers lens.
Note the huia feathers worn in his hair, which denote his chiefly rank and would have been stored in a wakahuia (treasure box) at night. The cloak he wears could be made from dog furs.
The print is on quality light card and measures 10" (25cm) x 8" (20cm). It comes with a descriptive page.
