Natures Buzz Manuka Honey has been found to contain antibacterial properties, including an enzyme that produces hydrogen peroxide, a proven antiseptic. And now a New Zealand scientist has found another antibacterial factor in top grade Manuka Honeys. This unique antibacterial component is called the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF), and has been further identified as the compound methylglyoxal.
These 2 antibacterial components appear to work together to provide even greater benefits. UMF is not broken down by enzymes found in body tissue, whereas ordinary honey will have its effectiveness reduced. UMF is stable when exposed to heat and light, unlike ordinary honey. And it remains active even when oxygen is not available, such as within a wound dressing. UMF diffuses deeper into tissues than ordinary honey.
Manuka is a tree with a pretty little flower, native to New Zealand. Natures Buzz Manuka Honey is harvested from selected Manuka stands found in the Far North of New Zealand, not far from where I live.
When the honey is brought to the Natures Buzz honey house, core samples are sent to Gribbles Analytical Laboratories in Hamilton, New Zealand, for testing of the medical quality antibacterial properties. Each sample receives an activity rating. Honey should have a rating of 4 or higher for it to be regarded as "Active Honey", the type with antibacterial properties and the UMF. Nature's Buzz has a tested rating of 10 plus and it is this grade of manuka honey which is used by medical professionals here and overseas.
