This exquisite New Zealand Maori Manaia wooden bowl is beautifully hand carved in New Zealand.
The Manaia is a Maori spiritual guardian, to ward off danger and protect against intruders. It acts as a provider and protector over the sky, earth and sea.Manaias usually have bird-like figures. Others may have bird heads and human bodies.
In this instance, the Manaia's eye is finished with New Zealand Paua shell.
Maori were great carvers, carving intricate bowls and treasure boxes from native timber. This is a simpler example but still very attractive.
The Manaia bowl measures approximately 11" (28cm) long and 1 1/2" (4cm) tall.
