Papahou Large Wakahuia Treasure Box
This Papahou, or Maori Treasure Box, is a very large, fine piece of carving. Papahou is also another name for a Wakahuia, a Maori Feather Box, but in this case the box would be more commonly used to hold treasured possessions such as tiki or other taonga.
The Papahou measures 650 x 235mm ( 25 1/2" x 9 1/4").
Carving along the sides is haehae pakati - a dogtooth pattern edged with parallel grooved lines. On the top is a very manly tekoteko figure, surrounded by haehae pakati.
A beautiful, large piece of Maori carving, a treasure you can hand down over time.
