Where the forest meets the river.....a young Irish woman ( Samantha Morton) has grown up among soldiers on Te Awanui - The Great River.  Too young, and pregnant by the son of a Maori chief, she gives birth to a son, who is kidnapped by his Maori grandfather.

Abandoned by her soldier father (Stephen Rea), Sarah's life becomes a search for her son as she finds herself torn between Doyle (Kiefer Sutherland), the broken-down soldier, and Wiremu (Cliff Curtis), the son of a Maori warrior.

As the conflict escalates between Maori tribes and the British Colonial Army, Sarah finds herself at the centre of a storm....with darkness all around and desperate to find her son, she discovers that only the heart can see.
