And why should you purchase this T-shirt?
Well first, it's a great looking t-shirt. It'll look good on you. The colour is flattering on all skin tones. It's a cross between the fabulous Donkey colour in our Possumsilk range, and Olive. The print is a pale blue and features the Sandspit and the lovely Oyster Catcher bird, one of several different species that inhabits the Sandspit and the Ngunguru estuary. You get the print on the front and the back, and as you'll see from the photos, the print dominates the back of the t-shirt. "Waahi tapu" is the Maori phrase for a spiritually and culturally important site.
Secondly, you are supporting an important environmental cause. Developers have purchased Ngunguru Sandspit and want to build a large number of homes on it. It's wrong for all sorts of reasons. It's a low lying tract of sand which acts as a buffer between the ocean and the coastal community of Ngunguru. It is not a sensible place to build. The Sandspit has been breached by storms....my father can remember this happening and the aftermath - Maori burial sites uncovered by the storm damage. Nor is it good for tourism - surveys have shown that tourists enjoy our pristine, untouched beaches. They like the idea of being able to go to a Northland beach in the summertime with the likelihood they may be the only person on that beach, and that their view of the ocean will not be impeded by man-made structures.
So the Save Ngunguru Sandspit group was formed several years ago to fight the development of the Sandspit and neighbouring Whakairiora Mountain. The group is made up of locals - ordinary citizens up against developers with deep pockets. So your help is asked for and much appreciated, and all you have to do is buy a t-shirt. And if you want to, we can also pass on additional donations to the group.
