The Art of (Maori) Poi DVD provides an excellent way to learn the various New Zealand Maori poi actions, both for long and short pois.  Presented by Maori.  

The DVD starts with an explanation of how poi came about, with a brief demonstration of the use of the taiaha and the patu (Club), showing how practising the poi was good training for using Maori weapons.  

Then you learn in detail how to make a modern day set of pois.

A small segment on short poi moves follows.

There is an explanation of the difference between short poi and long poi, then a longer segment on the different long poi actions.

The 18-minute DVD finishes with segments of short and long poi action.

A useful accompaniment to this DVD is our book Maori Games and Dances, as in that book the different poi actions are explained in words and illustrations.  You may also like to view our other Maori DVD which shows a long poi demonstration as well as haka and song.
