Country Calendar will be well known to all New Zealanders has the long running TV documentary show which showcases rural New Zealand.
The Best of Country Calendar includes the following 6 shows from the series, considered the very best of all time:
Mt Ida - Each year in the South Island High Country, sheep that have spent the summer months grazing the tops need to be moved to the lowland country for the winter. Country Calendar joined the mustering team on Mt Ida Station for their annual muster.
Waitomo - There are many farmers who have talents and interests outside of agriculture. Tourism is one area of growing importance to the rural community with homestays and farm holidays now an alternative income source. But one ex-farmer has taken tourism one stage further. He's developed a stage show for visitors with performing animals and slap-stick comedy that has the tourists in awe.
Golden Shears - Every one of the 40 million sheep in New Zealand needs to be shorn every year. This is back-breaking work. But shearing has also become a highly competitive rural sport with exponents travelling hundreds of kilometres each weekend to compete. The biggest event on the shearing calendar is the Golden Shears held each year in Masterton. This story follows the fortunes of reigning champion, David Fagan, and others wanting to take the crown from him.
Willie Wong - The hinterland of New Zealand has its fair share of hard-case characters. One such character is Bill Cowie, alias Willie Wong, a compulsive collector of rustic remains that he just can't bring himself to throw away! But, come the day Bill Cowie decided he had to hold a clearing sale to get rid of his prized collection, Country Calendar was there too.
Wild Cattle - While New Zealand may be a relatively small country, it does have locations miles away from the hassles of city life and the people who live there wouldn't swap their lives for anything. The Far North is one such area. There, the locals make their own entertainment, such as mustering wild cattle. They turn out to be formidable quarry.
Fence Playing - Country Calendar has established a reputation for pulling the legs of their viewers. There's been the bionic dog, the couple who only farm at night, to name just a couple of spoofs. But the story people remember most is the farming couple who played implements that can only be found on the farm.
