An authentic Tuatara toy is an item we've been asked for and are glad to be able to supply.  And the bonus is the Tuatara also comes with authentic Tuatara sound as well!

The Tuatara toy, which stands really well on its own, measures approximately 37.5cm (14 3/4") from the end of his nose to the tip of his tail.

Most of us are lucky to see a live tuatara in our lifetime, so it's pretty cool to have a replica tuatara, and one with so much attention to detail.  I'm thinking he actually deserves a place on my desk!

The name "Tuatara" is a Maori name meaning "peaks on the back".  The Tuatara is the only surviving reptile of an ancient order which flourished 200 million years ago.  The two species of Tuatara are unique in many ways.  They have two rows of upper teeth which overlap one row on the bottom.  Tuatara are able to hear, even though they possess no external ear, and they have a third eye ( parietal eye), visible as a hatchling.  Its function is still the subject of research.

Tuatara reproduce very slowly, taking 10 years to reach maturity.  Females lay eggs only once every 2 to 5 years, and the sex of their offspring is dictated by the temperature the eggs are kept at.  The average life span is 60 years but they can live to well over 100 years.
