Wakahuia Koru Maori Treasure Box
This fabulous Wakahuia, or Maori Treasure Box, is primarily carved in the Koru pattern. Korus are representative of the unfurling fern frond, and spiritually mean peace, tranquility and new life. The Wakahuia features a handle on the top, stretching between two Maori faces, and paua eyes.
Wakahuia were traditionally hung from the rafters to keep them safe. Inside were stored the treasured huia feathers ( used by men of high rank as hair adornment), as well as other treasures such as tiki.
This Wakahuia is approximately 38cm or 15" long, 14 cm (5 1/2") wide, and 9cm (3 1/2") high. Beautifully carved in New Zealand.
A wonderful example of Maori art, and an attractive box for your use or collection.
